Staff Accountant CFO Direct – Remote (Southern California Preferred)

CFO Direct is an innovative, tech-focused, full-service accounting firm providing Fractional CFO/Controller services, GAAP Accounting (not bookkeeping), Finance, and HR administrative services. Based in Orange County, CA, we specialize in Space, Aerospace, AI, Life Sciences, SaaS, and Manufacturing industries.
We are seeking a Staff Accountant to join our team. This position offers flexibility, competitive compensation, and the opportunity to work remotely. We are open to both full-time and part-time candidates, with a preference for those located in Southern California for occasional in-person collaboration with team members.
Key Responsibilities
- Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable: Full-cycle AP processing using Bill.com or similar AP software.
- Expense Reports: Manage employee reimbursements using Expensify or equivalent platforms.
- Payroll Administration Support: Assist with new hires, terminations, rate changes, and benefits renewals as needed.
- Bank & Credit Card Reconciliations: Perform daily GL coding and transaction classification.
- Month-End Close: Assist in the GAAP-compliant close process, including preparing and reviewing balance sheet reconciliations.
- Financial Reporting: Prepare financial statements and management reports.
- General Ledger & Journal Entries: Maintain the chart of accounts, manage the general ledger, and post all journal entries.
- Audit & Tax Support: Assist external auditors and tax preparers by providing accurate and timely documentation.
Requirements
- Location: Must be based in the United States; preference for Southern California.
- Experience: 1–2 years of accounting or bookkeeping experience.
- Education: Degree in Accounting or related field preferred.
- Technical Skills:
- Strong understanding of GAAP and accrual accounting.
- Proficiency in QuickBooks Desktop.
- Experience with Bill.com, Expensify, TriNet, or other accounting-related software a plus.
- Knowledge of third-party payroll providers (e.g., TriNet, Oasis, ADP, Paychex, Intuit).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the full Microsoft Office Suite.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and time management.
- Ability to work independently and remotely in a self-directed manner.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfortable interacting with senior-level management.
- Passion for working with tech startups and innovative companies.
Compensation
- Salary: $60,000 – $70,000 annually for a full-time role, commensurate with experience.
