Description Position Information: This is a Promotional/Open Competitive recruitment to create an eligibility list for current (one vacancy) and future vacancies. Successful candidates are expected to work eight (8) hours a day, five (5) days a week, and twelve (12) months per school year. GENERAL PURPOSE Under general supervision, performs skilled duties assisting journey-level maintenance personnel in the construction, maintenance, and repair of District-owned buildings, structures, equipment, facilities, and equipment in the trade areas of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, irrigation systems, welding, metal fabrication, and pool maintenance; and performs related duties as assigned. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the entry-level class in the facilities, maintenance, and construction series. Under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of skilled, routine, or helper duties in the alteration, maintenance and repair of District buildings, structures, facilities, and related mechanical and electrical systems.
Incumbents will be assigned to the Mechanical Systems Maintenance Division and are expected to learn and work in all of the areas covered by this division. Maintenance trades covered by this class include but are not limited to HVAC, electrical, plumbing, irrigation, pool maintenance, welding, and metal fabrication. With experience, incumbents are expected to perform routine projects or preventive maintenance assignments independently, exercising sound judgment and initiative.
Duties ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Performs a variety of routine to skilled building maintenance and repair work on District buildings, facilities, and equipment utilizing one or more of the following: plumbing, electrical, HVAC, irrigation, pool maintenance, welding, and metal fabrication.
Performs minor adjustments and assists in preventive maintenance to facilities, equipment, and machinery; changes heater and air-conditioner filters and light fixtures; lubricates parts, as assigned. Assists journey-level maintenance personnel in such trades as electrical, heating/air conditioning, plumbing, pool maintenance, welding, and metal fabrication. Removes, replaces, and repairs plumbing fixtures, faucets, valves, washers, and gaskets as necessary; wires and adjusts sprinkler controls, clocks, and valves; installs pipes and sprinkler heads for irrigation; installs water and sewer lines; clears stoppages as required.
Assists in the maintenance and repair of heating and air-conditioning equipment, refrigeration systems, boilers, and water heaters as required; checks equipment and systems for proper operation and replaces belts, fans, filters, and other parts as necessary. Assists in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment as required; installs and repairs electrical outlets, switches, receptacles, fuses, and tubes; replaces electrical wiring, ballasts, and lights. Assists in welding, cutting, and threading pipes.
Maintains routine records related to maintenance and repair activities including work orders. Carries and climbs ladders; loads and transports equipment, machinery, supplies, materials, and a variety of other articles within the District; cleans and maintains tools and equipment in a safe and proper working condition. Operates a wide variety of tools and equipment related to the assigned trade, including hand and power tools, router, drills, saws, gauges, meters, compressors, forklifts, and automotive vehicles.
Perform relative duties as assigned. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Basic methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in routine to semi-skilled electrical, plumbing, HVAC and irrigation maintenance and repair, pool maintenance, welding and metal fabrication. Shop mathematics.
Basic techniques of water and wastewater supply and drainage plumbing using galvanized, copper, and PVC pipe. Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools, and equipment common to the fields of electrical, plumbing, and related trades. Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
Ability to: Operate and maintain specialized tools used in HVAC, electrical, plumbing and related trades. Measure and calculate angles, lengths and volumes. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Estimate necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments. Exercise independent judgment and initiative without close supervision. Prepare basic records and reports.
Read and interpret manuals, specifications, drawings and blueprints. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work. Education, Training, and Experience: High school diploma, G.E.D
equivalent, or higher; and, Two (2) years of general maintenance experience related to electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or any other mechanical related systems. Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements: A valid California driver's license. Proof of automobile liability insurability.
